The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has updated its review of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a controversial decision regarding the tournament’s winner.
Initially, Senegal were crowned champions after edging Morocco 1-0 in the final, courtesy of a decisive strike from Pape Gueye.
The match, which faced disruptions, was eventually concluded on January 18, 2026.
After the final, CAF imposed sanctions on both Senegal and Morocco due to incidents that occurred during the game. While Senegal accepted the ruling,
Morocco challenged the decision, prompting a fresh review of the case. Following the appeal, CAF overturned the earlier outcome and awarded Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory, effectively stripping Senegal of the title.
The decision has generated massive reactions among football fans across Africa.
In response, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed that it has taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for further review.
CAF has since updated the tournament’s review section on its official platform, now listing Morocco as champions, Senegal as runners-up, and Nigeria finishing in third place.
However, an inconsistency remains in the report, as part of the introductory section still references Senegal as the winners and has not yet been corrected.
The statement reads:
“Crowned champions after a controlled campaign, Senegal imposed their authority. Morocco, solid and consistent finalists, confirmed their competitive maturity.”
