The Rwandan government has declared Friday, August 7, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Umuganura Day, the country’s traditional harvest festival.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, which said the holiday applies to employees in both the public and private sectors.
The ministry stated:
“The Ministry of Public Service and Labour informs all employers and employees in both public and private sectors that Friday, August 7, 2026, will be a public holiday in celebration of Umuganura Day.”
Umuganura is one of Rwanda’s most important cultural celebrations, dedicated to giving thanks to God and ancestors for a successful farming season while recognising the collective efforts of communities.
Although it is known as a harvest festival, the celebration takes place before the harvest begins. The tradition is based on the custom of community elders tasting the first produce of the season before anyone else is allowed to do so.
The festivities begin within families before extending to community gatherings, where people share traditional meals, cultural performances, and local crafts. Restaurants and cultural centres across Rwanda and in the diaspora also mark the occasion with special events highlighting the country’s heritage.
Agriculture remains central to Rwanda’s economy, with about 80% of the workforce engaged in farming. The sector contributes roughly 40% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, while tea and coffee account for a significant share of agricultural exports.
Umuganura dates back to pre-colonial Rwanda but was disrupted during German and later Belgian colonial rule. Following the country’s independence in 1962, efforts were made to revive the tradition, and it was officially recognised as a national public holiday in 2011.
Today, the celebration not only honours Rwanda’s agricultural heritage but also provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s achievements and progress over the past year.
