Award-winning Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has spoken candidly about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that a scandal in 2014 pushed him to the point of feeling suicidal.
During an interview with Vibe Magazine, the music star recounted how what began as a routine night in Ghana unexpectedly turned into a deeply traumatic experience that nearly shattered him emotionally.
Davido, who recently unveiled his Atlanta mansion, explained that the incident occurred after he performed at a show in Ghana. Following the event, he invited a woman he had met at a nightclub to his hotel room.
He said he had no idea that the encounter would soon develop into one of the most humiliating episodes of his career.
The photo that sent him into panic mode
Recalling the events of that night, Davido said his manager, Asa Asika, suddenly burst into his hotel room with disturbing information.
The woman had uploaded a photograph of him asleep to the internet. At that stage of his career, the singer was still young and learning how to cope with the pressures that came with fame, making the incident especially difficult to handle.
The situation quickly escalated as calls began pouring in from members of his family. “My Daddy was calling me. My sisters were calling me,” he recalled.
According to the singer, the combination of shame, intense pressure and fear of being judged by the public became almost unbearable.
Looking back on the emotional toll the scandal took on him, Davido made a heartbreaking admission.
“The girl posted me sleeping. My Daddy was calling me. My sisters were calling me. If I saw balcony that day, I would have jumped,” he said.
He went on to explain that he was young, reckless and deeply involved in multiple relationships during that period of his life.
In hindsight, he believes the incident served as a turning point, teaching him valuable lessons about fame, personal privacy and accountability.
Now, more than ten years after the ordeal, Davido says the experience played a significant role in shaping both his character and the internationally celebrated artist he has become today.
