Kaylee Hottle, the teenage actress who won over audiences worldwide with her role in the Godzilla vs Kong franchise, has died at 18 after being involved in a car crash in Maryland.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the site of a single-vehicle collision in Ijamsville at about 02:50 local time on Tuesday. According to investigators, excessive speed was considered a possible factor in the crash.
A 19-year-old driver involved in the incident was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Another passenger who was present at the scene reportedly refused medical attention.
Hottle’s father, Joshua Hottle, announced his daughter’s death in a video statement shared on Facebook, delivering the emotional message in American Sign Language.
The actress began her feature film career with the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs Kong, portraying Jia, a young deaf orphan who developed a special connection with Kong.
Her relationship with the giant ape became one of the movie’s most touching and memorable storylines.
Hottle appeared alongside prominent Hollywood stars such as Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall, holding her own despite being surrounded by established names in the industry.
As a deaf actress herself, she brought a level of authenticity to the character that struck a chord with viewers and members of the wider deaf community.
Three years later, Hottle returned as Jia in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which was released in 2024. Her work in the sequel earned her a Saturn Award nomination for best younger performer in a film, a notable achievement that highlighted the promise of her career at such an early stage.
Tributes Pour in After Her Death
Warner Bros, the studio responsible for the monster franchise, joined those mourning Hottle’s passing with a tribute shared on X, accompanied by a photograph of the actress and a heartfelt message.
The Texas School for the Deaf, which Hottle had attended, also informed its community of her death, describing the news as being shared with “profound sadness.”
In a statement posted on Instagram, the school wrote: “Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”
The institution further appealed to members of the public to give the family space to grieve by respecting their privacy and avoiding speculation surrounding the circumstances of the crash.
Before her untimely death, Hottle had also attended the premiere of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with director Adam Wingard and co-stars Brian Tyree Henry, Fala Chen, Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens.
The appearance served as a reflection of the remarkable progress she had made in the entertainment industry within only a few years.
