The Yoruba film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, veteran actor, playwright, and academic Kola Oyewo.
News of the celebrated entertainer’s passing at the age of 80 emerged on social media late on Friday, June 12, 2026, following an announcement made by his colleague, Olorunlaiye Yomi, via Instagram.

Yomi shared a photograph of the late screen icon and accompanied it with a brief tribute that read:
“Rest in peace Baba Kola Oyewo Labaluyege, orun ire o.”
Actor Kunle Afod also confirmed the heartbreaking development, paying tribute to Oyewo’s remarkable impact on the entertainment industry. In his message, he wrote:
“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on. 🕊️ It’s a wrap.”
Prior to his death, Oyewo had openly discussed his health struggles during a conversation with actor Kunle Afod in 2024.
The veteran performer, who experienced the loss of his wife in 2020, revealed that doctors diagnosed him with an enlarged prostate, a condition that made it difficult for him to urinate.
He went on to describe the difficult period he endured, explaining how he underwent multiple surgical procedures, medical scans, and various tests before eventually recovering and regaining his strength.
Beyond his achievements on screen, Oyewo built an impressive academic career. He studied at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he earned certificates in dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theatre Art from the institution in 1995.
His academic journey continued at the University of Ibadan, where he earned both a Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in drama.
Throughout his distinguished career, Kola Oyewo became widely recognized for his roles in acclaimed productions such as Sango, Saworoide, Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not To Blame, Oleku, and several other notable works that cemented his place in Nigeria’s cultural and cinematic history.
