The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has delivered a message of encouragement to Senegal as the West African nation prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Africa is set to have 10 teams competing at the inaugural 48-team edition of the tournament, giving CAF the second-largest representation behind UEFA, whose member associations will field 16 nations.
Senegal’s Road To The 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Teranga Lions secured one of Africa’s nine automatic qualification places after emerging as winners of Group B during the qualifying campaign.
Under the guidance of Pape Thiaw, Senegal completed the qualification series without suffering a defeat. The team recorded seven victories and three draws, with the stalemates coming against DR Congo, Sudan, and Togo.
Defensively, they were equally impressive, allowing just three goals across 10 matches. A crucial 3-2 away triumph over DR Congo proved decisive in the race for qualification, enabling Senegal to finish two points clear of the Leopards at the top of the standings.
CAF’s Message To Senegal
In a statement released on its official website, CAF praised the Teranga Lions, describing them as a side capable of making a significant impact at the global tournament.
Over the last decade, Senegal have established themselves as one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations. Before Morocco’s historic achievement in 2018, the Teranga Lions were among the few African teams to have progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
According to FIFA, Senegal, coached by homegrown tactician Pape Thiaw, face a demanding challenge in Group L, where they will come up against France, Norway, and Iraq.
The Teranga Lions famously stunned the football world at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan when they defeated defending champions France in the tournament’s opening match.
As they prepare for another World Cup campaign, Senegal are expected to depend heavily on the leadership and experience of their key figures.

Players like goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, defender Kalidou Koulibaly, midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, and forward Sadio Mane would guide the team through a difficult group-stage schedule.
The national team also arrives at the competition carrying the unusual distinction of being regarded as one of the two “winners” of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside tournament hosts Morocco, whom CAF also recognised as champions.
Although Senegal claimed a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final through a goal from Pape Gueye, the title was later withdrawn following a successful appeal lodged by Morocco against an earlier ruling.
In response, the Senegalese Football Federation took the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a final decision not expected until later in the year.
The controversy continues to generate debate involving Senegal, Morocco, and CAF, with both countries heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup maintaining their claim to the status of African champions.
