The European football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former goalkeeper coach Silvino Louro.
The former Portuguese international passed away on Thursday, March 19, at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness.
Louro’s legacy at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea FC, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and SL Benfica, has prompted heartfelt tributes.
Chelsea FC wrote:
“Everyone at Chelsea FC is deeply saddened by the passing of our former goalkeeping coach, Silvino Louro. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Manchester United added:
“We are saddened to learn our former goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro has passed away. Our thoughts go out to Silvino’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

SL Benfica sent out its condolence:
“Sport Lisboa and Benfica expresses its deepest sorrow over the passing of Silvino. Former goalkeeper of the Club and the National Team, he will forever remain in the memory of Benfica fans as a striking figure of a generation that greatly honored the badge on their chest. To the family and friends, the Club extends its most heartfelt condolences. 🤍”
Inter Milan also mourned:
“FC Internazionale Milano expresses its condolences for the passing of Silvino de Almeida Louro, the first-team goalkeeping coach for the Nerazzurri from 2008 to 2010. The Club stands in solidarity with the family during this time of mourning.”
Real Madrid also paid tribute to Louro’s key contributions to the club behind the scenes.
Highly-rated coach, Jose Mourinho, who worked with Louro for 17 years, shared a heartfelt message:
“Now I cry, but I’ll be able to laugh, laugh a lot, talk about you, remember every moment. In the Mourinho family you are loved and you’ll stay alive. I’ll continue to listen to you before each game ‘bro it’s going to be fine’. Rest easy little hands.”
Louro enjoyed a long playing career as a goalkeeper, retiring at age 41, before becoming an essential member of Mourinho’s coaching staff at FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
His legacy in European football, both on and off the pitch, is remembered fondly by teammates, players, and fans alike.
