Super Eagles’ coach, Eric Chelle has reportedly made a significant decision regarding the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping lineup, appointing Francis Uzoho as Nigeria’s new first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Stanley Nwabali.
As the team gears up for upcoming international fixtures, Chelle has opted for stability, ending Nwabali’s long-standing tenure as the undisputed starter.
The 29-year-old’s issues with the national team began after he mutually terminated his contract with Chippa United on February 5, 2026. The former Katsina United goalkeeper had been Nigeria’s preferred option in recent years but departed the South African club months before his contract expired.
Since leaving Chippa United, Nwabali has remained without a club, raising concerns over his match fitness and readiness for international duty.
This lack of regular playing time reportedly influenced Chelle’s decision to leave him out of Nigeria’s upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan. Once regarded as untouchable in goal, Nwabali’s sudden drop in status marks a notable change in the Super Eagles’ hierarchy.
In his place, Chelle has turned to Francis Uzoho, who had been the backup goalkeeper during the last Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third.
Uzoho has made eight appearances this season for Omonia Nicosia, and his selection reflects Chelle’s preference for consistency and discipline within the squad.
Maduka Okoye, who previously declined an AFCON call-up due to uncertainty over starting opportunities, has reportedly not fully regained the coach’s confidence.
Although Uzoho is now the starting goalkeeper, competition is set to intensify with the inclusion of Arthur Okonkwo of Wrexham United.
Having recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, Okonkwo brings added depth and challenge to the position. Chelle appears committed to fostering healthy competition in goal as the Super Eagles rebuild following recent setbacks.
