Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has named former Lagos Central senator Musiliu Obanikoro as the director-general of his campaign organisation ahead of the forthcoming contest.
The announcement was made during an expanded meeting of the campaign council held on Wednesday, June 3, with Hamzat personally presiding over the gathering.
Insiders within the campaign structure revealed that Obanikoro’s selection was influenced by his extensive political background.
According to sources, his record as a former senator, seasoned politician, and experienced election strategist made him a strong candidate for the role.
Sources further indicated that Obanikoro’s nomination received unanimous support from members of the council, with no opposition raised during the meeting.
Council members reportedly expressed confidence in his leadership, describing him as a figure capable of working effectively with all stakeholders.
His long-standing involvement in Lagos politics, coupled with his experience in both elective and appointed positions, was cited as a major advantage.

Reactions from Nigerians as Hamzat Appoints Obanikoro
Despite the apparent consensus within the campaign council, the appointment has sparked discussions among Nigerians, with many taking to social media and other platforms to share their views.
Wale Ibrahim said: “I am not surprised. The way the man has been going about everywhere with Hamzat, you know he is up to something. I know he is possibly too big to be appointed his CoS, but he will definitely play a big role in his government, in or out of cabinet.”
Stephen Emmanuels claimed: “If not that the governorship election results in Lagos are somehow known already, I would have asked if it was the same Obanikoro who could not win a gubernatorial election for himself in the past?”
Matthew Oriahi commented: “Some people have occupied as many government offices as possible in high places, yet they keep scavenging for appointments. No investment, no nothing. Shame.”
Ogbonna Daniel said: “That’s a notable political move, especially bringing in someone with Obanikoro’s experience to lead the campaign structure. It will be interesting to see how this shapes the APC’s strategy going into 2027.”
Martin-Rita added: “Obanikoro is coming in as the chief of staff. Baba has been positioning himself since the time of consultation.”
