A Nigerian lawyer has elicited reactions after arguing that the marriage involving the adopted son of Omega Power Ministries (OPM) founder, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, is not legally valid.
His comments come shortly after the cleric organised a wedding ceremony for his adopted son and a woman who later disclosed she is a mother of three.
Images from the event, shared on the pastor’s Facebook page, showed the couple dressed in formal wedding outfits, with the bride in a white gown.
Reacting to the development, the lawyer took to social media to analyse the union from a legal standpoint, insisting that it does not meet the requirements of a valid marriage.
He said:
“Apostle Chibuzor of Omega Power Ministry married off his autistic son to a single mother of three children. Let us test the legality or otherwise of that marriage. Let me tell you, that marriage is invalid. It is void for two reasons.”
The lawyer, who runs a Facebook page known as Law Parlour, went on to outline the grounds for his position.
He explained:
“No. 1, a church ceremony showing marriage is not valid on its own unless it is conducted in a licensed place of worship. That is, a place of worship licensed to carry out statutory marriage.”
“So, merely coming to church to show somebody in a black suit and a woman in a white gown does not make a marriage valid.”
Highlighting what he described as the most critical point, he added:
“No. 2, this is the most important ground why that marriage is invalid. A person of unsound mind cannot contract a marriage. That guy is unsound; his mind cannot comprehend what he is doing. All those things are just a ceremony to give the guy somebody to cohabit with; that is the position of the law.”
His post evoked mixed comments from cybercitizens accordingly.
