Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has spoken about the payment he receives for playing the famous Papa Ajasco character that made him widely recognised across the country.
In a recent interview with media personality Lucky Udu, the actor explained that he is paid per episode for his role in the long-running comedy series created by Wale Adenuga.
According to Ayoyinka, when the programme started years ago, he was earning ₦22,500 for each episode he appeared in.
He added that although the payment has increased over time, the structure has largely remained the same.
“Just take for instance, they are paying me about ₦45,000 per episode… sometimes ₦60,000 per episode now,” he said.
The actor noted that production of the show is usually limited to about 12 or 13 episodes annually, meaning actors only receive payment for the number of episodes recorded within that period.
Ayoyinka also discussed some of the challenges he faces despite the fame that came with the character.
He explained that the Papa Ajasco brand is officially owned by Wale Adenuga, which means he cannot use the name, costume or identity for outside engagements without permission.
“That character is a very strong character. Anyone that wants to use me outside wants me as Papa Ajasco, but I cannot use the name or costume without permission,” he said.
Because of this restriction, the actor revealed that he has missed out on several endorsement deals and public appearances that required him to appear as the character.
Ayoyinka, who previously worked with the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago, also admitted that financial challenges have persisted despite his long career on television.
“I don’t have a car of my own. I don’t have a house of my own,” he disclosed.
