Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja has said that the country is willing to assist Nigeria in tackling terrorism and other security threats affecting the country.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on March 8, 2026, the ambassador stated that Iran strongly opposes terrorism in all forms and is open to cooperating with nations battling extremist groups.
According to him, Nigeria has faced significant security challenges in recent years due to the activities of insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province. He said Iran understands the devastating impact of terrorism and is ready to work with Nigerian authorities in efforts aimed at combating the threat.
Raja explained that Iran has also experienced terrorism in the past, which is why the country condemns such acts globally and supports international cooperation against extremist violence.
During the interview, the Iranian envoy also addressed allegations made by Michael Freeman, who reportedly accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism within Nigeria.
Raja rejected the claims, describing them as attempts to damage the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Iran.
He emphasised that Iran respects Nigeria’s independence and security while valuing its diplomatic ties with the government and people of the country. According to him, the two nations have maintained friendly relations for more than six decades.
Nigeria and Iran have fostered cooperation over the years in areas such as trade, culture, and security, thereby strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
Iranian official states that their government remains committed to maintaining these relations and supporting Nigeria as it continues to address security challenges and promote stability.
