An autopsy has now clarified what led to the death of 22-year-old Afrofuji singer, Afeez Adesina, widely known as Destiny Boy.
The young artiste, who gained recognition for combining traditional Yoruba Fuji with modern Afrobeats, died on January 17, 2026.
His passing, described as controversial, sparked widespread reactions and demands for a proper investigation.
After his death, multiple videos circulated online showing what looked like his body being taken to a mortuary, further fueling speculations about the cause of his death.
In one of the clips, the singer was seen lying in a vehicle, with cotton wool inserted in his nostrils and ears.
In an effort to address the rumours, an associate released another video, explaining that Destiny Boy had been dealing with a private health condition before his death.
“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. May God rest his soul. Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the man said.
Family members also disclosed that the singer had been managing a long-term illness, which reportedly caused seizures.
Speaking in an online video, his mother, Saida, said the family explored both medical and traditional methods in trying to treat the condition.
Despite these explanations, many social media users continued to question the circumstances surrounding his death, even as they expressed condolences.
Following the controversy, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the case.
The police added that the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for further investigation.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, said:
“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.”
Autopsy Report exposes what killed singer
According to findings by Daily Trust, the case file had earlier been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. However, before that advice was issued, the Police Homicide Section conducted an autopsy.
It was learnt that the report became available about a week ago.
When contacted on Friday, the police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed its release.
He stated that the results showed toxic levels of tramadol and its metabolites, as well as methamphetamine, in the deceased’s body.
The report concluded that the cause of death was “aspiration pneumonitis resulting from the ingestion of these toxic substances.”
The short statement made available to Daily Trust reads:
“The Consultant Anatomic Pathologist reported that toxicology results revealed harmful levels of tramadol and its metabolites, as well as methamphetamine, and opined that the cause of death was aspiration pneumonitis resulting from the ingestion of these toxic substances, with the date of death being 17/01/2026.”
Destiny Boy rose to fame in 2019 after releasing a Fuji version of Davido’s ‘If’, which gained massive attention online.
He also performed covers of songs by artistes such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.
Some of his songs include ‘Lamba’, ‘One Transaction’, ‘Gbese’, ‘Billion Dollar’, ‘Mio Gbonkankan’, and ‘Lowkey’.
The singer and his partner, Iremide, welcomed their first child together in November 2024.
